Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

WHAT IS RECONSTITUTED (MANUFACTURED) LIMESTONE?

Reconstituted (Manufactured) limestone is crushed limestone which is mixed with a small percentage of cement and water.  The mixture is placed in a industrial block making machine and compressed into block form.

CAN I COLLECT MY BLOCKS?

Yes, you can pick up your own blocks.    You do need to be aware that the blocks are heavy and you may have to make more than one journey.  Trailers without their own braking system have a maximum carrying capacity of 750kg and sometimes smaller trailers can be as low as 400kg. See Vehicle/Trailer/Restraints Loading Guide.

CAN YOU DELIVER OUR BLOCKS?

Yes.  We can arrange delivery to your property.   Most blocks are delivered on pallets except  1000x350x350mm blocks which are delivered in pack form.  We normally place the blocks on the property verge.  Sometimes we may go beyond the verge but only with the permission of you or your agent.  If permission is given, than the Company accepts no responsibility for damaged caused  whilst proceeding beyond the property line.

HOW DO I BUILD A FREESTANDING OR RETAINING LIMESTONE WALL?

This information is best provided to you by a professional such as an architect or stonemason.

Freestanding Wall:A freestanding wall is not a retaining wall and in most cases will require some form of footing/foundation.  Piers may be required.
Retaining Wall: A retaining wall is designed to hold back material such as sand, gravel, rock etc.  The stress on a retaining wall can be increased when it rains as the water content builds up behind the wall.  This is why some walls require drainage.  There is a requirement to build the wall on a footing/foundation.  Piers may be required. There is a rule of thumb which says that the thickness at the base of the wall should be equivalent to 50% of the height of the wall i.e. a wall 1200mm high would be 600mm wide at the base.  This rule does not apply to walls that support the weight of pools, buildings or traffic etc.

Different councils have different guidelines when determining whether planning permission is required.  In most cases, if a wall is 500mm or higher, then council planning permission is required.

DO RECONSTITUTED (MANUFACTURED) LIMESTONE HAVE TO BE SEALED?

Reconstituted (Manufactured) limestone is a manufactured product and does not turn black with age like natural limestone.  It does, however, discolour as a result of other elements such as mineral deposits in bore water or mineral deposits/dirt transported by the wind or other means.  Sealing will reduce the likelihood of discolouration.  We do not sell sealants.
